Willow Creek Church near Chicago is one of the most influential churches in America. They are the poster child for mega-church, and thousands of churches ‘copied’ them, went to their seminars, bought their books and curriculum etc. But apparently they discovered they made a huge mistake.
From Out of Ur:
“Speaking at the Leadership Summit, Hybels summarized the findings this way:
This ought to be interesting to follow. Perhaps theology shapes praxis even when we think it doesn’t.
This is all new to me, but I guess I would respond it is one thing for Hybels to tell us what he thinks did not “work”. It is another thing for him to say Scripture is sufficient, to say Christ feeds his sheep via the infallible Word.
He points to a mistake.
How about repenting and confessing our on-going MO was we were chiefly concerned with what the customer wanted, rather than what the Christ wanted.
But perhaps I am too harsh?
What say ye, Cavman?
I think that business mentality may be the death of the church.
Paul was concerned with communicating the message Jesus gave him to the people Jesus sent him to. Jesus ultimately set the agenda, not people.
I guess the question not yet asked, is what did they ’sell’ these people? If we measure success by how many people show up, or how many walk the aisle… we have failed as far as the Great Comission is concerned.
I think what this study of theirs does is get us to think about how are we supposed to help those who come to faith mature. Program-oriented churches are necessarily getting the job done. Simple Church focuses on the need for a process, not programs. We also need to remember the component of community. I think the pulpit ministry is vital for this… preaching the gospel for sanctification as well as justification. I’m really appreciating Lovelace’s book on Spiritual Dynamics. We often focus on the products of renewal instead of how remembering they are the fruit of renewal, not what produces it. The influence of consumerism is a form of destructive enculturization.
Well stated; care to now go the next step in this thread by posting how process and renewal look different than program and revival mindsets at the local church level and individual saint level? What are some applications you are learning from Lovelace’s book?
You da man, Cav! And again, we are for you and praying God will open a door for you soon.
Hey Cav,
great blog; but just to help a good friend.
I notice to the right under your heading of sermons you list the White Horse Inn. Actually I have listened for many years, and I am altogether certain I have yet to hear a single sermon on the WHI. I think perhaps this is an oversight, and that you intended to list them under “Websites I Visit”?
Thanks Cav!
Go Sox!
PS. watching PTI Friday and Kornheiser was telling Wilbon the Pats kill everyone, and Wilbon thought this will be a tight game as ‘Phins will try to preserve the 72 Dolphins as only undefeated team in modern NFL history. I thought of you; did you see that dialog? If not, go to ESPN.com and watch PTI.
Not technically sermons, but downloads, on WHI… calling the section downloads… not so inspiring.
I doubt the Fin’s are thinking about the streak… they just want to win a game, any game. they are in serious trouble this season, but have given the Patriots are hard time the last few years even though the have not been very good.
