I was not a believer. I was not convinced the Celtics would be a great team. It is only 7 games into the season, but unless Doc Rivers kills one of them by playing KG, Pierce and Allen 35+ per night they will be a great team. Seriously, only one of the games was close. And they have now beaten the Nets twice. So? you say. The Nets have essentially owned them for the last 3-4 years.
Tonight, while pummeling the Nets, KG figured out how to keep his minutes down- foul trouble. I wonder if the PGA Tour will rotate turns at foul trouble to play about 30 minutes. “Dudes, I’m tired tonight. If you 2 got it, I’m gonna commit a few cheapies to get some rest.” Tonight Allen shot a miserable 4-14 from the floor, KG played 30 minutes and they still won 91-69.
Pierce was shooting 48% going into tonight, and shot 6-10.
Garnett was shooting 55%, and hit 8 of 15.
As a team they are shooting 50%. And the big difference from other years… they are playing solid defense, holding their opponents to 38% shooting.
Here’s the Sports Guy’s take (I can’t seem to link it all):
“But here’s what we do know: Defensively, they have a chance to become as good as San Antonio. Offensively, they have a big man who draws double-teams and two perimeter guys who can create quality shots whenever they want. And they’re nearly impossible to beat at home because of the reborn crowd and KG’s ongoing William Wallace impression. The first half of the Denver game was the single greatest display of basketball by a Celtics team since January 4, 1991, and that team could have won the title if Larry Bird’s back never went out. For all the die-hard Celtics fans who spent the next 16 years wondering if their team would ever matter again, watching the Nuggets get eviscerated was like watching a beloved relative emerge from a coma or something. It’s one thing to have a good team; it’s another thing to have a great team. These guys didn’t want to just beat Denver, they wanted to break the Nuggets’ will. And they did. This team will win 60 games if it stays healthy. At least.
On a mostly unrelated note- the Knicks saga just keeps coming up with entertaining new story lines to compensate for the lack of victories. This is even better than the Kobe-Lakers drama, and the Shaq’s immanent demise. A player trying to blackmail a coach for playing time… some striking Hollywood writer must have found a side job working for the Knicks.
Cavman, how is it going bro?
Interesting article; thanks for the post!
I agree Celts are playing quite well; pressure was on last night and they still won in a close one vs. Heat.
A couple things I’ve noticed however; they are racking up these wins vs. teams in the East. 8-0, 7-0 in the East.
So I am going to hold to my 48-34 prediction before the season’s first game [as you no doubt recall w/ that Cavmemory of yours].
Cav, let’s predict their first loss … for fun… little contest you know?
I pick Celts first loss will be at Orlando. Am I confident of this? No way; Magic have lost two home games, and my theory is Celts last night at home playing the 1-8 Heat, were probably naturally looking ahead [somewhat] to this trip to Orlando vs. the 8-2 Magic.
Lastly, who wrote that article? Though I enjoyed most of it, what was he smoking to actually print that the 91 Celtics would have won it all had Bird not injured his back? Cav, I followed NBA very closely back then. I can tell you by memory the Celts were in the finals in 81, 84, 85, 86, 87 and that was it! The big three of Parrish, Mchale, Bird and Johnson were all already slowing down by the late 80’s and this guy thinks / knows they would have won it all in 91?
Bird and McHale [look it up for me would you] had to be 32-34 years old and goodness, Parrish may have been what 36 37??
Ok, I forgive him, he is a homer who has after all these years has forgotten how knees, ankles, arches in feet age in basketball players. i.e. Jordan, Dr. J were prime examples.
Happy B-Day Cav!
YOu forgot Reggie Lewis as the budding young star at that point. Bill had season tickets, so he saw far more games than I did.
Pierce has a bad back, injured in Wed. game. But I think they still have the players to beat the Magic. Not sure to whom the first loss will come.
You missed a good presentation on church renewal/revitalization today. But I know you’ve been crazy/busy. You can steal my notes.
Actually I do remember Reggie Lewis but the big three were getting too old. The writer said they would have won it all…
Hey, revitalization presentation? What you talking about, Cav?
Cav,
Magic led tonight by 17 at the half over the Celts.
But Celts battled back to trail by only y at the end of 3.
In the 4th Celts closed to within 4 @ 85-81.
Posey hit a three pointed to go up 88-87.
Magic grabbed the lead right back and held it throughout but
Ray Allen hit a 3 pointer w/ 7 sec remaining to pull within one @ 103-102.
Trailing 104-102 Paul Pierce had a 27 footer to win the game but 27 feet is 27 feet.
Celts now 8-1; still better than anyone thought, you know?
Pats already up 14-0
Skins lost a tough one @ Dallas today 28-23.
skins now 5-5 and heading south having lost two straight and are on the road next week down in Tampa.
