I must have been sleeping, because I missed this headline.
For some time now we’ve been hearing about how the CIA (and other intelligence gathering agencies among our allies) was wrong. Sadaam did not have weapons of mass destruction.
Yet ….
They discovered over 500 tons of low-grade uranium (yellow cake) that is used to manufacture nuclear weapons. It has since been shipped to Canada where it will be used in nuclear reactors. Hey, shouldn’t it have been sold to our nuclear power facilities???? Just a thought since we dumped so much money and blood into this thing.
Anyway … where are the “mea culpas” from those who continue to claim we entered under false pretenses. I think the ability to accumulate 500 tons of the stuff for future use is shocking. The Atomic Commission did nothing, which does not bode well for the developments in North Korea.
I know it’s cool to “down the Bush admin,” but how do we know there weren’t WMD’s there? Those guys can move stuff over the border quickly. But you know, obviously the man on the street ALWAYS has the right answers and we ALL know what’s going on. You rock, Cavman!
The Bush Administration has admitted that they were wrong about the presence of Weapons of Mass destruction in Iraq. And they were right: There were none. Yellowcake is a far distance from a working nuclear weapon. Also, the fact that it is being sold to a Canadian company for use in nuclear reactors should indicate that yellowcake is not only “used to manufacture nuclear weapons.”
Moreover, the mere presence of yellowcake is not particularly surprising or incriminating, since we knew that Iraq had a nuclear program in the past (one of their reactors was destroyed by Israel in 1981 IIRC) and was probably seeking a weapon. That was then, and this is now, and not only did Saddam lack such weapons, he was apparently not actively developing them.
Nathan,
There are 2 primary uses for ‘yellow cake’. Which of them do you think he was storing it up for?
If you read some of the articles, they had laid the groundwork to develop them but waited until there was less international attention.
If I had 500 tons of a this hanging around and wasn’t planning on using it- I’d sell it. Why did he hang on to it?
The Bush Administration didn’t tell us about this for 5 years precisely so it couldn’t be stolen by terrorists and gangsters.
There is a difference between disinformation meant for enemies and lying. I think this falls under the former.
We didn’t find a WMD, but did find lots of an essential component to one. I find it significant, but apparently you don’t.
I agree with ya CavMan – I made this same connection on my blog as well. I blogged the CNN post – apparently, you and I are the only ones who made this connection. Great post.
