The little big man for the Red Sox, Dustin Pedroia, has now seen the payoff for all the hard work and stellar play. The Red Sox have locked him up for 6 years. He’ll get $40.5 million over that time frame. The Red Sox get a hard-working, inspiring sparkplug who puts up some pretty significant numbers. He’s one guy that won’t be moving on soon. With a revolving door at shortstop, Theo has solidified the other middle infield position. And you have to wonder how long it will be before a “C” is sown onto his uniform to go along with the 2007 A.L. Rookie of the Year award & World Series champion ring, and his 2008 A.L. Gold Glove, Silver Slugger and MVP awards.

My only question is, is this to much for a middle infielder? I don’t mean any disrespect to what he accomplished this year, but stuff happens. He could be slide into hard or wrong and be injured, or collide with an outfielder, for some examples.
I do not wish him ill but, in the crisis the economy is in, will the fans be able to afford ticket price increases?
How much did A-Rod get as a middle infielder in his previous contract with the Rangers?
Yes, Pedroia is a different kind of player than A-Rod, but just as important to his team’s success.
In the first year of his contract he will be paid less than Alex Cora was this past year. He will average $6.75 million over the life of the contract, maxing out at about $10 million at the end. I don’t consider that outrageous when you keep in mind his defense, timely & consistent hitting and ability to score.
The Red Sox have already announced they will not raise the price of tickets next season. So … with the general increase in salaries expected, this is a good, solid financial move by the Red Sox to lock up a young talent who has proven he can succeed at the highest level & in the biggest moments.
