Some time back I did a rather brief review of Paul Tripp’s new book on marriage, What Did You Expect?” As I mentioned there, I think this is one of the best books on marriage. Tripp goes beneath the surface of marriage (and this is applicable to ANY relationship).
In the DVD, taken from a conference, is similar but not identical to the book. In the DVD, he focuses on the big picture of marriage. And that heart of a marriage is determined by worship. What you worship will determine the quality of your marriage, and other relationships. The more you worship someone or something instead of God, you will be in conflict because you don’t have the same desires and priorities.
Tripp addresses the reality that marriage is part of how God sanctifies us. He brings this together with the kingdom of God and the kingdom of self. He brings that back together with worshiping God as Creator, Sovereign and Savior.
The feedback on the series was very positive. The people who attended Sunday School really thought it was good and meaningful. It challenged them, which is good.
“Worship is the root of a marriage. Romance is the fruit, not the root, of a good marriage.”
Tripp also has some funny stories to lighten the mood so it is not too serious. There are also a few goofs that were left in that make those of us who preach feel better. At one point he asks people to turn to a text and then never reads it or explains it. It is not overly polished.
This DVD series is a great complement to the book. They work well together. The book goes more in depth about how sanctification takes place and some of the commitments needed to protect and nurture a marriage. The DVD series includes a study guide to help small groups and couples talk through some things. It worked well for us in Sunday School, and would also work in small groups or over a weekend.
