In 1986 a new friend lent me a cassette of an album called Fearful Symmetry by a band called Daniel Amos. I had heard nothing like it and I had been exposed to a wide variety of music. I was a new Christian at the time. I didn’t like it. But I gave it a few listens. It grew on me, like mold.
Soon Daniel Amos was my favorite band. I never got to see them in concert, having just missed a show in Boston at the Paradise Club just behind my dorm at Boston University. That was one of their last tours. Their last album came out in 2001 just before I got married. I figured I’d never have a chance to see them.
This summer, that all changes. They recently announced a summer tour and they have 2 dates in Arizona. The show in Phoenix is booked for the night I get back from a mission trip to Mexico. There still isn’t a site in Tucson for the date (hello, someone). I’m planning to go to the show in Phoenix unless a location in Tucson comes together. Being new here, I just don’t have the connections yet. But I’m working on it.
This had me thinking about a set list. What songs would I want them to play. Yeah, they would be there longer than the double disc Live at Cornerstone 2000 recording I have. After all, they have 12 albums to draw from. I’ve been meaning to do this, but keep forgetting. But Pam Mark Hall just posted that the rehearsals sound great and mentioned some songs they are prepping for the shows.
Pam listed I Love You #19, Posse in the Sky and Stone Away. So count on those 3 songs. I would have put I Love You #19 on my list too. Here is what else I’d ask the guys to play. If the song is in bold, I’ve heard that it is on the set list.
- Hound of Heaven
- The Surf Suite, including (near-sighted girl with approaching) Tidal Wave & Endless Summer
- Ghost of the Heart
- Walls of Doubt
- Mall All Over the World
- Memory Lane
- It’s Sick
- William Blake
- Dance Stop- just for fun
- Sanctuary
- The Pool
- Shadow Catcher
- Darn Floor-Big Bite
- Half Light, Epoch and Phase
- Father Explains
- Gate of the World
- Out in the Cold
- The Bubble Bursts
- Banquet at the World’s End
- Hole in the World
- Grace is the Smell of Rain
- The Organ Bar
- When Everyone Wore Hats
- My Hand to God
- Who’s Who Here?
- The Staggering Gods
- Pretty Little Lies
That’s what I would love to hear. Any other suggestions?
Update: Word is they are also playing some of Terry’s solo material and some Eddies’ songs. That opens a whole new world. But they played something from all their albums, and played for over 2 hours on their tour opener.
From the Eddies, I’d at least like:
- Rubber Sky
- Cardboard Box
- The Twist
- I Had a Bad Experience….
- Driving in England
- Hide the Beer
- I’ve Got an Idea
Additional Confirmed Songs are:
- Man on the Moon
- If You Want To
Great post! I’ve shared it at the Facebook event page for Daniel Amos’s 2011 Summer Road Tour stop in Phoenix! I’m sorry that no Tucson show came together, but I look forward to meeting you in Phoenix in less than two weeks!

Oh, and I totally failed to respond to the post itself! I’ve honestly been incredibly happy with the set lists I’ve seen floating around from this tour. Their entire discography has been well-represented, and they’ve even managed to drop in a surprise or two.
That said, the few DA tunes that I’d love to hear that I haven’t seen represented so far are Vox Humana’s “When Worlds Collide,” BibleLand’s “Low Crawls & High Times,” and Songs from the Heart’s “Uneasy Lies the Head of the Confidence Man;” although, excepting only “When Worlds Collide,” I’m not prepared to sacrifice any of the other songs they’ve been playing to hear these. I’m pretty sure my kids would be happy if they just played through Doppelgänger: they can’t get enough of “(Mall) All Over the World,” “Real Girls,” and “New Car!”
You know, it’s the last show of the tour. Maybe we can petition Daniel Amos to play a three-hour set. 🙂
Around 2 pm I was driving thru Casa Grande returning from San Luis Rio Colorado. After a week in Mexico, I didn’t have the strength to drive back to Phoenix, especially after not seeing my wife & kids for a week. Sorry to miss the show- I’m really disappointed but that’s just the way things go sometimes.
